1. Maintaining good communication

As a manager of either a large or small company, ensuring that you communicate with your employees effectively is one of the first keys to success. Silly mistakes are often made within the hospitality industry due to the failure of managers giving the correct commands to their staff. Mistakes can be crucial when customers are involved; therefore, ensure you are the one who is the problem solver and don’t allow your staff to belittle you.

2. Hire a good workforce

Although it can be daunting to be the driving force behind hiring candidates, always ensure you listen to your gut. Look for skills such as determination, loyalty and passion in candidates, who are willing to get the job done; otherwise, you may be the one clearing up the mess. As a manager in the hospitality industry, customer complaints will be your responsibility, so make your job easier by hiring the right people.

3. Mentoring

After hiring new candidates, you will also likely be responsible for supervising them and evaluating their progress. It may be worth setting up mentoring sessions so that your new employees know exactly what is expected of them and how they can progress within their role. It may also be worth writing out a handbook which they can read in their own time. Mentoring is a large part of a management position; therefore, understanding how to manage your employees effectively will be a learning curve.

4. Daily operations

As a manager, you will also be expected to oversee day-to-day operations which mean ensuring equipment and processes are up to scratch and readily available. Equipment may include health and safety tools for both employees and customers, as well as general equipment which will need to be used to fulfill job roles. If you manage a hotel, for example, you will be expected to ensure that all vacuums are in good working order. Broadly, you will need to make sure that all departments, employees and customers have exactly what they need whether that is in terms of budget needs, training or general assistance.
