The final year of a degree can be a daunting time for students, about to burst into the business scene without knowing exactly what they want to do with their degree or top up degree. The good news is that there are a huge variety of exciting and different industries to work in, that offer something a little bit different.
Agricultural business
If you’re more at home out on the farm than in the urban jungle, a career in agricultural accounting might just be what you’re looking for. A farm is a business like any other with its own specialist set of needs, quirks and rules, and you’ll be working on a familiar set of requirements – from estate planning to accounting and taxation. But alongside that, you’ll develop an understanding of the industry as a whole, from specialisms in herd management to the practicalities of dairy farming, to give your clients as rounded a service as possible.
Fisheries accounting
Britain is a major exporter of fish, and with one of the longest coastlines in Europe, it still has a major fishing industry to support it. As a specialist accountant in the fishing industry you’ll be helping to manage the fiscal side of the business, but alongside that you’ll develop a familiarity with many other sides of the industry you hadn’t ever considered – including crew management, fishing stocks regulations, and the market-facing operations of a fishing company.
Forensic accounting
If you grew up on detective dramas, rooting for the cops to catch the bad guy, then forensic accountancy might be for you! As part of your job, you’ll help the police uncover instances of fraud by using your superb attention to detail to spot, root out and prove guilt in fraud cases of all sizes – some involving millions of pounds! But it’s not all cloak and dagger, you’ll also help companies pore over their results to find out what they’re doing wrong, and help companies big and small find minute inefficiencies that could save them a lot of money when eliminated!
Engineering accountancy
If you like seeing the results of your work actually make something happen in the real world, then you’ll enjoy accounting in engineering. Helping to manage costs across a project, as well as working with planners to allocate time and resources, your work will be directly responsible for that huge new bridge, massive skyscraper or new football stadium coming to life. You’ll also be helping drive forward a massive growth industry for the UK, and making a difference to the economy in the process!
