Looking for a job after studying for your HND

HND Business London | Mont Rose College

If you’re about to enter the final year of your HND, and you don’t plan to continue studying for a top up degree, you may be starting to consider your employment options. According to Prospects, 25.9% of students go straight into employment after completing their HND.

It’s a daunting yet exciting time, as so many more career options are now available to you because of your new qualification. Yet, don’t worry too much if you’re not quite sure where to start, as there are several paths you can consider.

Are you looking for a new job?

Start by thinking about the sector you want to work in, and search online for shortages and vacancies within that area. Consider how your HND will benefit your chosen career path and include all of the skills and industry experience you have acquired through study on your CV. Make sure you look at the details of each job specification and tailor your CV accordingly.

Do you want a job in a company you have previous experience with?

If you liked the company you gained valuable industry experience from while studying for your HND business, you may want to check whether there are any vacancies available there. It’s worth having a look at the company’s social media pages to see if they have recently advertised any positions.

Alternatively, you could call the company directly to ask. Remember to highlight that you have previously worked with them as part of your study and name who you worked under. Someone who remembers your high standard of work may be more than willing to keep your name in mind should a future position arise, even if there’s nothing available at the present time.

Do you want a full time position where you’re already working?

Many students work alongside studying, and may eventually want a full-time position at the company they are already working at. If this applies to you, ask your employer about any opportunities that may be on offer once studying is over, and find out what attributes their ideal candidate would possess. Show them how serious you are by volunteering to take on more responsibility, and making the effort to gain industry contacts.
