Huge career opportunities in accounting

According to research carried out recently by recruitment firm Robert Half UK, starting salaries for finance and accountancy jobs will increase by approximately 2.7% during 2017, while analysts can expect to see their wage rise by around 3.8%.

The research also revealed that there is currently a shortfall in skills when it comes to financial roles; according to Robert Half, compliance, accounting and financial analysis are the most difficult jobs to recruit for, meaning there are significant opportunities for those willing to dedicate themselves to studying the accountancy sector.

The shortfall in talent in these particular roles is largely due to the fact that accountancy is a profession in transition. For many years the role of the accountant has been relatively straightforward: assist a business with their finances, ensure everything is completed on time, and save them a bit of money if possible.

How interesting is the job of an accountant?

However, with so many organisations having decided to adopt advanced computer software to deal with all compliance related tasks, accountants have been forced to modify their skill set to stay relevant; put simply, some of the old school accountants are being left behind, and they are leaving gaps ready to be filled by the next generation.

Phil Sheridan, senior managing director of Robert Half UK, said: “Competition for the best people is intensifying and as this year’s guide demonstrates, salaries for hard to fill roles continue to rise and outpace the average salary by a significant margin. The growing skills shortage is one of the key challenges for any organisation to overcome.”

Not only are accountants becoming increasingly valued, the tasks and skills required to thrive in the vocation are becoming more complex and multifaceted. Those that have been embedded within the sector for a number of years are struggling to adapt to such change. Never before in the history of the profession have accountants had to alter their work practices to such a significant degree, and it would appear that those getting in on the ground floor will flourish as the industry continues to evolve.
