Only last year, a scientifically-developed calculator devised by University of Oxford researchers predicted that there was a 95% chance computer technology would eventually make accountants redundant. The assessment, reached in the wake of a study by American media firm NPR, noted that ‘progressive computer technology’ could potentially lead to accountants finding themselves without work.

However, what this research failed to take into account was that what it means to be an accountant is rapidly evolving and progressing beyond the more dated definition. Compliance, which can indeed be carried out by a number of software systems, has been pushed to the background, while comprehensive strategic planning and long-term financial services consulting are steadily moving to the fore.
The traditional accountant may well be at risk of becoming outdated and replaceable as companies strive to cut costs and save time by employing technology, but those willing to continue their education and those always on the lookout for new ventures that will make them relevant, appreciated and prized will be able to thrive and flourish.

Advanced computer software, alterations in how companies operate and the fallout from Brexit will all play a significant part in the profession’s future.
