Taking Care of Your Mental Health

Taking Care of Your Mental Health | Mont Rose College

Here at Mont Rose, we take Mental Health seriously. We thought it is about time for another Mental Health check and offer guidance on what you can do to take care of your mental health.

Mental Health refers to one’s emotional, psychological and social well-being. Therefore, when we talk about mental health issues or problems, we mean internal and external factors that can influence a mood, way of thinking and ability to cope.

Although it may seem difficult or burdensome at times, it is important to implement activities that are proven to improve mental health in your daily life.

Firstly, and most importantly, recognise the signs of ill mental health. Reading up on and learning the symptoms of mental health conditions can clue you up on what to look for in your mental health.

This goes hand-in-hand with noting down your feelings consistently so that you are able to recognise patterns in your own mental health. You can then distinguish between regular bad days that everyone has and a mental health condition that might be more serious.

The next most important step would be to reach out for help at the earliest instance. There are plenty of means you can use to ask for help. Opening up could take the form of talking to a friend or family member or seeking professional help through counselling or therapy services. These are available online and in person and it is imperative that you take the first step to access the resources available to you.

Bear in mind that in order to maintain a positive mind-set, it is important to fruitfully nurture all aspects of your mental health. This includes working on your physical health. Keeping active releases feel-good hormones so it is a fool-proof way to feel instantly better. Being active does not necessarily have to mean countless gym sessions; instead, you can try a dance class or pursue a sport you like. Even a daily walk will help improve your mental health. It is about making an effort to work on your health.

Similarly, taking up a creative hobby or learning a new skill can help. This is a great way to relax and unwind from stress in your life. It has been found that spending more time on being creative is linked to experiencing emotions that are more positive. Learning or practising a skill can also help build your confidence and self-esteem. A hobby or skill will enable you to feel a sense of community, which leads well to our next piece of advice.

Our final suggestion is to stay connected. It is easy to feel like you are alone when you are struggling with your mental health, but please try your hardest not to isolate yourself from those around you. That will only make you feel more stranded than you already do. Evidence shows that supportive relationships with friends, family and neighbours benefit the mental health of individuals and the population.

We hope this has been of use. Stay strong and remember that your MRC family supports you!
