There is a range of responsibilities, e.g. to the student, the employer, the organisation. There are practical responsibilities as well, such as planning, managing and delivering assessment.
My main responsibility in our organisation Mont Rose College is to plan, prepare, manage and deliver assessments to the candidates who have come to apply for one of our numerous courses like HND courses, Top Up courses, Teacher Training Qualification. I am in charge of marking the Diagnostics tests and giving Feedback to the applicants – Feedback is both written (on the paper work) and oral (while explaining the candidates why they have failed the test or greeting them for passing the exam with flying colours). These tests have been scanned, uploaded and saved on LIMS where we keep students’ files as soft copies. The hard copies of the applicants’ files have been kept in safety locked cabinets and the Admission Manager has the only access to them.
I am also responsible both to the authorities of Mont Rose College and especially to my line manager for the outcome of the admission process as a whole and to the Awarding Body – Pearson (BTEC Edexcel).
In a retrospective plan I have been a teacher for more than 17 years back in my country Bulgaria (teaching ESOL to adults) and in the UK (teaching ESOL to adults). I intend to continue running ESOL courses as this has always been my beacon and I could not resist following it. No one can teach you to become a teacher…You need to naturally be born with the passion needed, with the heart needed, with the patience needed. Everyone can learn a subject, can go deeply through a particular science but this is far not enough for them to become teachers, to get them ready to be able to pass the knowledge on to the students. To be a teacher, to dare call yourself a teacher means first of all for you to be thirsty for knowledge, to be eager to learn something new on a daily basis in order to make yourself richer and only then you can announce yourself a teacher.
I have been teaching with passion but it has always been difficult for me to assess my students. For example if I can see that the student has put a lot of efforts to do their tasks but the result is not to high standards I have always given the benefit of the doubt to them so that I can encourage them for future.
My responsibilities as a manager, administrator and teacher were both to my employer and organization – MRC and the students.
My main responsibilities as an assessor have always been as follows:
- Consistence
- Fairness
- Giving a clear, constructive feedback on time
- Assessing, marking, grading
- Giving the decision
- Maintaining the standards
- Maintaining the confidentiality
- Not disclosing the results – which is related to GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)
- Not disclosing individual results, only disclosing for the class as a whole without mentioning students’ names. We could only refer to the students’ numbers. And this is so called student-centred assessment, i.e giving priority to the student.
